Meet The Team

Our team here at SunStar Labs is a diverse group. Our chemist come from a wide range of back grounds from many different testing fields. We have chemist that have many years of experience in all disiplines of the lab from Waste Water, Air specialists, Metals experts to custom Mass Spec applications and testing needs.

John Shepler

Owner/Laboratory Director

Mr. Shepler started his analytical chemistry career as a mobile lab chemist with Geochem in 1993.  Through hard work and dedication, he was quickly promoted to Laboratory Manager and was responsible for the Southern and Northern California operations.  In 1996, Mr. Shepler purchased a mobile lab of his own and started SunStar Laboratories.  Under Mr. Shepler’s direction as Owner and Laboratory Director, he has grown the laboratory to service all of California and has provided laboratory services across the United States. Mr. Shepler is hands-on with daily operations at the lab and is always available to the customer. He works closely with the Quality Assurance Manager, chemists, and project management team to ensure the utmost service is provided with the highest quality data.

Taili Hanson

Environmental Laboratory Supervisor/Purchasing Manager

Mrs. Hanson has worked with Sunstar Laboratories since 2019. She started as an entry-level lab technician and worked her way to Senior Chemist in our VOC and Air Lab and is now currently the Environmental Laboratory Supervisor. Mrs. Hanson oversees daily lab operations, manages lab resources, and implements lab protocols and procedures. Mrs. Hanson is also the Purchasing Manager in charge of inventory, managing vendors, and ordering laboratory consumables and equipment.

Cathy Hartman

Controller/HR Manager

Mrs. Hartman became part of the SunStar team as Controller in 2009. With more than 30 years of experience in accounting and over 25 years in Human Resources, she is a vital member of the management team. Mrs. Hartman is deeply involved in both day-to-day accounting operations and HR functions. She collaborates closely with the Owner/Lab Director, Director of Operations, and Laboratory Supervisors to ensure that all financial and HR activities comply with legal regulations.

Alexandria McGee

Cannabis Laboratory Supervisor

Ms. McGee joined SunStar Laboratories in January of 2018 as an entry-level lab technician and swiftly worked her way to Senior Chemist and is now our Cannabis Division Supervisor. Ms. McGee oversees daily lab operations, manages lab resources, and implements lab protocols and procedures as well as operates our LC/MS/MS instrument for PFAS/PFOA. Her rapid ascendancy stands as a testament to her exceptional aptitude and dedication.

Steven Garcia

Project Manager

Mr. Garcia has worked with SunStar Laboratories since October 2023. He has over 13 years’ experience in the environmental laboratory testing industry starting as a Laboratory Technician and quickly moving up to Analyst, then Project Management Assistant to Project Manager. He has further hands-on lab experience as a Metals Department and Laboratory Manager at various labs throughout Orange County.

Joann Marroquin

Director of Operations

Mrs. Marroquin has worked with SunStar Laboratories since September of 2016.  She has over 36 years’ experience in the environmental laboratory testing industry, holding various management positions in Inorganics, Project Management, and Client Services. Prior to joining SunStar, Mrs. Marroquin worked as an Account Executive performing sales in Houston and San Antonio Texas and then in southern California.  Mrs. Marroquin obtained her MBA from Le Tourneau University in Houston, Texas in 2009. She brings her operations experience as well as her sales experience to SunStar to aid the team in providing excellent customer service as well as high quality data.

Jeff Lee

Senior Project Manager

Mr. Lee has worked with SunStar Laboratories since January of 2019 as a Senior Project Manager.  He has over 16 years’ experience in the environmental laboratory testing industry working with Tier 1 Consultants. Mr. Lee focuses on ensuring he exceeds clients’ expectations for customer service and works closely with his clients to ensure all project requirements are met.
