Our team here at SunStar Labs is a diverse group. Our chemist come from a wide range of back grounds from many different testing fields. We have chemist that have many years of experience in all disiplines of the lab from Waste Water, Air specialists, Metals experts to custom Mass Spec applications and testing needs.
John Shepler
Owner/Laboratory Director
Mr. Shepler began his analytical chemistry career in 1993 as a mobile laboratory chemist with Geochem, where he quickly advanced to Laboratory Manager, overseeing operations throughout California. In 1996, he founded SunStar Laboratories, which has since expanded to serve clients throughout California and across the United States. As Owner and Laboratory Director, Mr. Shepler remains actively involved in daily operations, working closely with laboratory staff and project managers to ensure exceptional customer service and the highest quality analytical data.
Alexandria McGee
Cannabis Laboratory Supervisor
Ms. McGee joined SunStar Laboratories in January 2018 as an entry-level Laboratory Technician, quickly advancing to Senior Chemist and ultimately Cannabis Division Supervisor. She oversees daily laboratory operations, manages resources, and ensures adherence to laboratory procedures and quality standards. She also specializes in PFAS/PFOA analysis using LC/MS/MS instrumentation. Her career progression reflects her technical expertise, dedication, and strong leadership abilities.
Alexis Treto
Project Manager
Mrs. Treto began her career with SunStar Labs in 2017 as an entry-level Laboratory Technician. Through her dedication and commitment to professional growth, she advanced to Wet Chemistry Chemist, Assistant Project Manager, and now serves as a Project Manager. In her current role, Mrs. Treto is dedicated to meeting clients’ environmental testing needs while providing exceptional customer service and effective project management. She takes pride in building strong client relationships, maintaining clear communication, and ensuring each project is completed efficiently and to the highest standards.
Cathy Hartman
Controller/HR Manager
Mrs. Hartman joined SunStar Laboratories in 2009 as Controller, bringing over 30 years of accounting experience and more than 25 years in Human Resources. As a key member of the management team, she oversees daily accounting and HR operations, working closely with the Owner/Laboratory Director, Director of Operations, and Laboratory Supervisors to ensure financial accuracy, operational efficiency, and compliance with applicable regulations.
Jeff Lee
Senior Project Manager
Mr. Lee joined SunStar Laboratories in January 2019 as a Senior Project Manager, bringing over 20 years of experience in the environmental laboratory industry working with Tier 1 environmental consultants. He is dedicated to providing exceptional customer service, maintaining strong client relationships, and ensuring project requirements and deadlines are consistently met.
Irma Velma
Project Manager
Mrs. Vela joined SunStar Laboratories in 2023 as an Administrative Assistant. Her responsibilities include supporting Human Resources, coordinating daily office operations, managing receptionist duties, and overseeing client invoicing. Her organizational skills, attention to detail, and dedication have made her a valuable member of the SunStar team.
Joann Marroquin
Director of Operations
Mrs. Marroquin joined SunStar Laboratories in September 2016, bringing over 40 years of experience in the environmental laboratory industry. Her background includes management roles in Inorganics, Project Management, and Client Services, as well as sales and account management in Texas and Southern California. She earned her MBA from LeTourneau University in 2009. As Director of Operations, Mrs. Marroquin combines her operational and business development experience to support laboratory efficiency, exceptional customer service, and high-quality analytical data.

Senior Project Manager
Mrs. Davidkov has been employed with SunStar Laboratories since December 2024 as a Senior Project Manager. With over 20 years of experience in environmental project management, she is a dedicated and detail-oriented professional who excels at prioritizing responsibilities, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and ensuring timely completion of project objectives. Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Davidkov has successfully managed and coordinated complex environmental projects, consistently demonstrating strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to meeting client expectations and project milestones.
